The Richmond Art Museum sponsors a wide range of educational and outreach programs, including year round art classes, artists' workshops, the Annual Phantoscope High School Film Festival, and the popular children's exhibit Art Is… We have also developed a partnership with VSA of IndianaI to offer educational art programs for exceptional students in Wayne County.
Art Classes
The Richmond Art Museum offers a selection of art classes year round, starting with the Spring Sememster of 2009. If you have been looking for art classes, look no further. If you don't see something you are interested in this semester, check back and chances are that something next semester will catch your eye!
Taught by experienced local and regional artists and featuring a variety of styles and media, art classes are a great way to hone your artistic skills or try something completely new! Refund Policy:
*Registrants for a class/program that is canceled for any reason by RAM will receive a full refund.
*Registrants for a class/program who request a refund 10 business days or more before the class/program start date may receive a refund (minus a $10 processing fee).
*Registrants for a class/program who request a refund fewer than 10 business days before the class/program start date will not receive a refund.
*Refunds will NOT be given to any student who cancels out of a class after the first class has met.

9th Grade - Adult
A pottery course for growing potters, Clara Whitman Parrett will teach students all about what it takes to be successful when working with clay, focusing on mugs as a form for this class, including wedging, trimming, glazing and plenty of time spent on the wheel! This course will focus on mastering the form of the mug and continues to focus on fundamentals like controlled pulling, shaping, rim compression and trimming of the foot.
When asked about her work, Clara has developed her thoughts about clay and the relationship between it and the artist, and the role clay has played throughout human history. “Clay and our work with clay have such an immense and largely unspoken part of our human and geological history. These expressions and history engage me, evoke my curiosity, and draw me to explore.”
Clay and glaze included in class fee. Old/work clothing suggested.

This summer pottery course at RAM will focus on wheelthrown pottery and will be highlighted by a Raku style firing! Enjoy learning about wheelthrowing techniques and participate in the exciting firing process!
Brian focuses on teaching the mechanics of throwing properly and believes strongly that once a person has the basics down, the sky is the limit! The class will culminate in a firing at Brian's studio of student selected works that were made during the class!

Description: This will be a course for beginners in the art of making wearable jewelry. Instructor Samantha Miller, trained at Savannah College of Art and Design, will introduce students to the exciting world of jewelry making! This project based course will involve a broad spectrum of jewelry making techniques and include four finished projects! Look forward to learning the art of beadwork and finishing strands, wirework and link making, chains and rings, and even a look at more abstract wire work! You will make and take home 4 pieces of jewelry during the course of this class.

Painting: The Importance of Color and Drawing

Join the talented and experienced Nancy Foureman as she teaches painting skills with specific emphasis on updating your palette, using contemporary and creative color combinations and employing effective color space usage! This class will focus on COLOR and DRAWING. One hour compact lessons will be taught about these two elements. Afterward, time will be spent on executing these elements in painting. Description: This course examines the use of documentary photography as a communication tool for the visual investigation of contemporary issues. In this course you will learn to document what you see with your photographs. After a short review of camera skills, we will cover topics such as how to tell a story with honesty, integrity and clarity, establishing a unique vision and how to tell a story from a personal point of view. A major emphasis of this course is choosing a project and fully investing in it. Please expect to photograph between classes and bring images to share to the upcoming class as weekly class review plays a significant role in guiding the progression of each student’s individual documentary project.

RAM WORKSHOPS
Painting Workshop: Composition, Value and Color Harmony

Instructor: Mary Ann Davis
Richmond Art Museum is offering a workshop for artists in oil or pastels. This one day workshop from 9 – 5PM with Indianapolis artist Mary Ann Davis will emphasize skills to help you in your plein air or studio painting ventures with a focus on en plein air painting! Covering topics like composition, and values, Davis will guide you to be able to see the painting you want to paint out in the field. Finding color harmony in your painting will also be a topic of discussion for the day! Sign up today to work with this talented Indiana artist!
Mary Ann, has worked as a graphic designer since 1978, and founded Davis Graphic Design, in 1991. She earned her BFA from Herron School of Art in 1976, majoring in lithography, and has studied painting under Antonious Raemaekers, Ron Monsma, Lois Griffel and Carolyn Anderson. Mary Ann is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society and works with oil or pastel. Her compositions are filled with vibrant color, movement, and vitality capturing the ever-changing color of nature.
Mary Ann works primarily “en plein-air” painting on location with oils and pastels. She has been featured in numerous juried shows and has won regional and national awards for her work. Her work can be seen at Hoosier Salon Gallery in Indianapolis, and New Harmony, Mary Williams Fine Arts, Boulder, Colorado and Sheldon Fine Arts, Naples, Florida.
