Louis Betts (1873-1961)

With early training from his father in Chicago, Betts painted his first portrait at age 14. He studied with William Merritt Chase on a Cresson Scholarship from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Preeminently a portraitist, his sitters included: the Drs. Mayo, Hamlin Garland and Booth Tarkington. He is also known for his paintings of pretty women in sun-filled gardens and parks with parasols.
